October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Pass It On. #PurplePurse

MomSelect Banner

Did you know that domestic violence affects one in four women in their lifetime? That's more women than breast cancer, ovarian cancer and lung cancer combined.  The statistics are staggering, only about half of Americans say they would know how to help a victim of domestic violence. A majority of Americans agree that domestic violence is tough to talk about. More than one-third of Americans have never discussed the issue with family or friends-  I  have personal experience of a friend who suffered in silence, until she had a near death experience,  that finally got her family and friends to ask more questions. She suffered from  Epilepsy and in the past could use that as an explanation for bruises, but after this particular episode she told her family the truth.
Dealing with it  is a long hard journey and programs like Purple Purse provides a conversation starter.

As part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October, Purple Purse, The Allstate Foundation’s symbol for domestic violence, proudly represents a woman’s way to escape the cycle of abuse by gaining financial independence.  Now in its third year, The Allstate Foundation’s Purple Purse campaign has pledged to donate up to $350,000 to the YWCA for programs designed at assisting survivors of domestic violence and other women in need.

·         Taking action against domestic violence is simple - Purple Purse: Pass It On. 1,300 purple purses filled with domestic violence information and facts will be distributed throughout the U.S. Each purse has a goal of being passed between family, friends, community leaders, celebrities and media
·         Visit Facebook PurplePurse to share a virtual purple purse as each share or re-share triggers a $5 donation to the YWCA
·         Visit PurplePurse.com to track your purse’s journey – see where it’s been and how many times it’s been registered

The Allstate Foundation uses Purple Purse and PurplePurse.com to get people talking about domestic violence. The website appears to be an online fashion magazine, but when the user looks more deeply, she will find a safe place with a variety of information and resources specific to the issue of domestic violence and financial empowerment.

Purple Purse, now in its third year, helps people carry on conversations and pass along information about domestic violence and financial abuse by placing the power directly into people’s hands with a purple purse.

Act now and share the virtual Purple Purse to raise money for domestic violence survivors and the YWCA.

Thank you for your help in talking about domestic violence and passing it on.
